The Novo Serus J Baritone in Inca Burst is one of those guitars that feels familiar at first glance, but the deeper you look, the more character it reveals. The Inca Burst finish gives it that worn-in warmth, with the metallic gold centre fading into darker edges. With light distressing, it has the look of a guitar that has already lived a life, with just enough wear to feel believable without pushing into relic excess. The tempered pine body and black headstock keep the build visually cohesive, while the black 3-ply guard, black witch hat knobs, and Mastery hardware pull it into that offset-meets-hot-rod space Novo does so well. It feels like a vintage oddball that never existed, but should have.
The 28” scale keeps the strings taut in B standard, A, standard, or lower tunings. The tempered pine neck is lightweight and lively, with a broken-in character that responds quickly to your touch. The compound 9.5”-14” radius provides an easy transition from comfortable chord work down low to smoother lead work higher up. The Mastery M1 bridge and NV vibrato add tightness and stability while still keeping that loose, expressive offset character intact.
The Serus J Baritone really separates itself with a pair of Lollar Mini-Broilers, sitting between a traditional single coil and a P90, but with more weight and attitude. This ensures the low strings are tight and focused, but retain enough upper-end bite and harmonic detail to keep it from ever sounding dark or muddy. Clean, they have a thick, piano-like clarity with strong note separation. Pushed into gain, they become aggressive and textured, with a raw midrange growl that suits everything from spaghetti-western twang to heavy, low-tuned riffing. It has that rare balance baritone players look for, where the extra scale length adds depth and authority without sacrificing articulation. This Novo Serus J Baritone in Inca Burst pushes you into new tunings, new ideas, and a completely different way of approaching the instrument.
