Some guitars become iconic because of the players who used them. Others become iconic because of what they represent. The Gibson Les Paul Custom "Black Beauty" somehow managed to do both. Introduced in 1954 as Gibson's flagship electric, it took everything people loved about the Les Paul and dressed it for a black tie event. Ebony finish, gold hardware, block inlays, and the unmistakable split diamond headstock. More than seventy years later, this 2020 Gibson Custom Shop example carries that legacy beautifully.
Personally, I don't think there's a finish that looks more elegant than a clean Black Beauty. There's nothing flashy about it, yet somehow it commands all of the attention in the room. The mahogany body and neck paired with the ebony fingerboard deliver the warm, authoritative voice these guitars are famous for, while the comfortable '60s C neck feels immediately familiar in your hands. Finished with gold hardware and all the classic Custom appointments, it's easy to see why the Black Beauty has remained Gibson's flagship for generations. Some guitars follow trends. This one simply reminds you why classics become classics.
